Impact Award, Spring 2020

Abbie Peters

Abbie Peters is devoted to service. Alongside earning multiple honors for academic excellence, she has committed countless hours to others as a Fulton Ambassador, an E2 counselor, a Young Engineers Shape the World high school student mentor, a Court Appointed Special Advocates fundraiser supporting abused and neglected children as well as much more.

In terms of her engineering management studies, Peters has been captivated by the broad applicability of the field. When she took her first upper-division course in the major, she found herself counting the days until the next lab session.

“I was so excited to be learning real-life concepts,” she says. “Engineering managers directly support teams to achieve productivity, purpose and happiness in their work. It’s guiding people to obtain broader scope and more substantial goals.”

Peters says the most memorable aspect of her time at ASU may be her senior thesis at Barrett, The Honors College. She worked with Fulton Schools Professor of Practice Daniel McCarville to create a business proposal for a K-8 STEAM Museum on the Tempe campus.

“The project has grown far beyond what I could have imagined,” she says, “and the museum now has a planned location, involvement from the Herberger Institute for Design and the Arts as well as interest from multiple other sectors at ASU. I also had the opportunity to travel to Philadelphia and Washington, D.C., to research exhibits and functionalities at other STEAM museums.”

Following her undergraduate experience at ASU, Peters will be working as an industrial engineer in robotics and automation for American Express in Phoenix. Additionally, her long-term aspirations embrace personal and professional growth, as well as continued outreach and service.

“My studies have prepared me to plan and manage projects both within engineering and beyond,” she says. “So, I am willing to go wherever my career takes me. I just want to help and inspire others every step of the way.”
